Yampa Valley Medical Center ranked safest hospital in Colorado

Hospital care doesn’t get much better than at the Yampa Valley Medical Center. In 2012, Consumer Reports ranked YVMC as the safest among 38 hospitals surveyed in Colorado. A year later, in July 2013, YVMC was one of six Colorado hospitals to receive the Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award.

Medical_Hospital“It’s not often we get to see our hometown hospital top such a list,” says Judy Zuccone, the hospital’s chief compliance officer. “It’s something we’re very proud of.”

YVMC was one of six hospitals in Colorado and one of 379 nationwide to receive the Patient Safety Excellence Award, placing it within the top five percent of all hospitals in the nation in safeguarding patients from preventable complications. In 2013, YVMC initiated three additional safety programs, including the Respiratory Therapy department’s new mobile point-of-care testing process.

“Our commitment to safety can be seen every day,” Chief of Staff Dr. Kevin Borgerding says. “Safety and teamwork, along with personalized care, are an integral part of our hospital’s culture.”

In 2012, Consumer Reports ranked the safety of hospitals across the nation based on their rate of infections, readmissions, complications and mortality. The rankings also considered how well a hospital’s staff explains to its patients guidelines for taking new medication and how well they prevent patients from undergoing unnecessary CT scans. The rankings included 38 hospitals in Colorado and 1,159 nationwide.

YVMC scored above the national average in its ability to prevent infections and unnecessary scans that use radiation. Overall, the hospital ranked first in Colorado with a score of 67 out of 100.

“We’re excited about being recognized at this level,” adds YVMC CEO Frank May, crediting the hospital’s staff of 553. “We have high expectations for ourselves, and it’s nice to have them confirmed.”
